Liberals and Conservatives .. A Not So Civil War
64
THE OLD LIBERAL - THE OLD CONSERVATIVE - THE OLD WAY
I'm writing this in between part one and two of "The Smart Revolution". We have some serious problems in front of us here in America, and we're not putting ourselves in a position to pull out of the dive. The comments section of political blogging and forums are a microcosim of the situation that exists between conservatives and liberals in this country I believe. I'm so immersed in the mission of the Housefire Project that I've almost become sterile to the war between conservatives and liberals. That is to say, my focus is on "what is" not "who done it". (See The Housefire Project Mission.) See, I don't have time to play this dangerous game. What's sad is that most of you don't have the time either, but still you war on.
The insulting closed minded people from both sides make problem solving impossible. I'll give you a couple of real life, short examples. When we started putting the Housefire web site together, we were amateurs at site building, and still are. We have begun narrowing our focus and dialing things in lately and it's a challenge keeping the site up to speed. Anyway, I'll never forget when Mike (Old Poolman) called me. He was down at his place working on the site, and he was excited. He'd just figured out how to install the CNN and Fox news feeds onto the site. We're anything but pros and little discoveries get us as excited as little kids. My organization's success is predicated on my ability to bring both liberals and conservatives into the organization to take on the nation threatening issues, while leaving the all important high passion, ideological issues at the front door in order to solve problems like the economy, crooked leadership, and cool stuff like that. http://housefireproject.com/
I'd forgotten until yesterday that the Fox News feed was on the site. I know that Fox News is bad news for liberals, and having it on the site is probably source of agitation to all liberals. We don't need it for any reason, and out of respect for my Liberal brothers and sisters, it's coming down. What reminded me that it was on there was this .. I went to a hubber friend's hub, and when I finished, I moved down to the comments section to give support. I saw where he had referred her to our web site. She said that she had been to the site, took one look and saw the Fox News feed, and wanted nothing to do with the organization. We are the most unique political non profit out there, and nobody does what we're doing the way we're going to do it. She didn't look at any of the exciting initiatives we're going to under take. I tried to explain to her that we were truly bi partisan, and why that was important, but she called me names, and accused me of being part of the ones who were after Obama at all costs. You know, the "All such and such are alike thing." Obama is not mentioned on the site nor was it mentioned by me. She just continued with her hatred of all conservatives until I finally gave up being a gentleman and told her to get her dumb ass and broken record over to the forum, and quit wasting my time. Liberal or conservative, these are not the people I'm looking for.
One person took a look at our motto "Strength In Numbers, Power Through Prayer" and the word prayersent em south. I'm serious. I'm getting rid of Fox, but the motto stays. While I am a Christian, there is no part of the Housefire Project where we tell people where, when, or if they should pray. It's my hope that all people develop a close relationship with the Creator, but that's a part of my personal life, and has nothing to do with the Project. People who can't see past these things aren't the open minded, forward looking problem solving gladiators that can help us begin a new attitude. "TO THE FORUMS WITH THEM!!"
THE NEW CONSERVATIVE - THE NEW LIBERAL - THE NEW - WAY
Ways of old .. POLITICS/PARTY FIRST .. AMERICA SECOND.
"In my many years I have come to
a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm and
three or more is a congress."
-- John Adams
Wow! It seems that Americans not trusting their elected officials goes back a long ways doesn't it? A new Pew Poll shows that only 20% of Americans have any degree of confidence in our prestigious leadership in Washington. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/04/18/politics/main6409635.shtml That's pretty freaking amazing when you see how many Americans pick up their political ax, and go to war with the other side defending the very politicians they don't trust.
"Yeah, just look at how conservative and liberal Americans treat one another, yet our conservative and liberal leaders play golf with one another. Hmmm .. Do ya think there's a story there?
These guys in Washington? They make a living campaigning, not solving problems. They've had us just where they wanted us .. Listening to them, as both sides blame the other for not getting anything done. And we bought it, hook, line, and sinker. Then we went and got that proverbial battle ax, and declared war on one another while the suits laughed all the way to the bank. Some will understand this, while others won't. Truth can be a difficult thing to wrap your mind around, because it can also be a scary thing to face without a game plan. I've got one, and it's going to replace the old worn out one.
It starts with attitude. Getting rid of that old negative attitude of the past, and thinking fresh. Thinking smart, and reaching out to other smart people. You have to realize that if you are a conservative, conservatism left to it's own without balance would destroy this country quickly. Liberalism left to it's own would do the same thing just as quickly. We need each other, and we will learn to work together. We'll do it by assigning value to one another's beliefs whether or not we agree with those beliefs. My wife loves the show "Survivor." I don't like the show, and I don't watch it. But I sure as hell don't tell her the show is stupid, and so is she for watching it. I mean I could, but we'd be about as successful as the liberals and conservatives of old at having some positive results for a while. Get my drift? (winky, wink)
LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN .. Six points to better results
- A new attitude. Until August of 1920, women didn’t have the right to vote. After 144 years, the old thinking, gave way to a new path. The mindset had to change in order for America to move forward. As the quote from John Adams above demonstrates, we’ve been electing people that we don’t trust, and taking their failures out on one another for a long time. Some traditions can help you, and some can kill you. You have to be smart enough to know which ones are which.
- Realize the difference between idiots who just love to argue, and non-idiots. Do not waste your time, energy, and attitude on these obsolete windbags.
- Whether you be a conservative or a liberal, look for the shortcomings or poor results of your own side first. Ignoring the stupidity of your own camp while pointing the stupidity of the other camp does nothing but build up the wall of resistance. Problem solving stalls.
- Never insult. Understand that while you feel strongly about raising or not raising taxes, the other person feels just as strongly as you do about what they believe. Realize that if you want them to assign you value, you must first assign them value. Always remember that the check and balance system our founding fathers placed in our government’s DNA is a critical part successful governing. We need (the other side) just as much as they need us to pull this thing off.
- Direct your anger or frustration at the guilty parties. You and I. That’s right, we’re to blame. As I’ve said all along, “That gang of crooks on Capitol Hill didn’t shoot their way in. We put em there.”
- Since the problem began with us, the solution will have to begin with us. Get involved, and get educated.
Most of you have a pretty full life, and don’t feel like you have enough time to get things done without having to worry about politics too. That’s bull. The same people tell me they don’t have time to work out. No matter how busy we think we are, we waste a lot of time every day. (I can prove it if you don’t believe me) There is no one who doesn’t have a spare thirty minutes a day to take care of their body and create better health. Just fifteen minutes three times a week on Google, can get you a lot of political education in just ninety days. No excuses here. We can’t get this nation back on track with excuses.
In closing, I want to remind you of something that you probably haven’t considered, and I want you to take this with you and think about it. Many of the issues that we’ve fought each other so hard over are .. That is the battle itself is based on nothing more than pride. Be honest and realize which ones are and which ones aren’t. We’re talking about a new way of doing business. Remember insanity is described as doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results!

Excellent hub. I hope every one reads your message and understands the magnitude of the words. We MUST start listening to others' views, stop the unfounded hatred, and start working together and come to some kind of compromise that we all can live with in order to fix the problems at hand.
Jim...
Allow me to begin by saying that the suit-jacket really 'dresses up' the whole...No pants thing.
As you know...I removed myself from the political forum postings awhile back and I did so because of the unreasoning back and forth that was consuming my mental energies and focus.
I think we all come to Hubpages for our reasons...mine are more (what passes for) literary, I suppose.
I have always found your direction...focused on the problems and not the personalities to be liberating. I followed the comment thread you mentioned...I saw what you are writing about, in action.
I suppose this is why I am still waiting for my Part 2 of 'The Smart Revolution'because you went in this direction first...that's fine. As a liberal...I appreciate your removal of Fox news.
Prayer is in your Charter, your heart, your right, and your actions.
Keep up the awesome work my friend.
Thomas
Have you heard the Republicans complain about Pres. Obama and the New World Order? Pres. Bush Sr. introduced that concept to the American public as if it were the platform that he ran on. No one had heard of it before.
I really don’t know what the NWO is. I assume it has something to do with the fact that Deutsche and Suisse banks are advising the FDIC on how to reorganize our banking system, Saudis own Citigroup, Japan cornered the American entertainment industry, India took over IT, factories moved to China, the treasury was emptied for bail-outs, customer service at Walmart is conducted from the "Pacific Rim", oil companies have record profits in the middle of a recession, Belgians own Budweiser, Brevard County privatized probation and community control, teachers demonized for having it too good, the unemployment rate in Florida is around 25% while it is reported as 10%, over-fishing, the disappearance of the family farm, accounting for the whereabouts and activities of everyone on Earth, Harris Corporation trying out their new toys, and everyone clamoring to split up Israel.
My parents lived in Alexandria when I was going to KMI. I was appalled at the squalor and crime two blocks over from the most exclusive brownstones and gourmet restaurants in town. It was an embarrassment. What do foreign visitors think of our great nation when the see that? It is an indication of the self-absorption of our leadership. It reminded me of the Roman patricians flaunting their hedonism in the face of the rabble who were kept in check with force or entertainment.
Sorry, but Floridians have never respected that town. I don't want to send a representative. I don't want them in my business. I don't trust them. I don't like them. I sure don't need them. They have only caused me grief and taken or caused me to lose my money. I'm not going on the street to protest, but I have plans to survive their incompetency. I come from a military family, and can tell you that honorable service has been taken for granted. Literally, or figuratively, it is Satanic.
We should actually start fresh with only the constitution and bill of rights. These are simple, concise documents. Our lawmakers have such complicated ones that it is ridiculous. Demons are laughing and selling tickets to the show
Washington D.C. is running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, because it is. Focus on what to do regionally, because it is just a matter of time before the chicken bleeds out and falls over dead.
Fox news is now removed so no liberals will suffer a heart attack. I honestly had no idea there were those who were that offended by Fox or I never would have put it on there in the first place.
You are so correct in this hub. Our elected representatives have mastered the "game" and have been fooling us for many years. The age of playing the blame game and accomplishing nothing has got to end. With any luck at all, the Housefire Project will have some of these bums looking for a new job.
Bravo! This Hub made me want to stand up and cheer. Maybe you should re-post this hub every week (if it was permissible)
I TRY to stay neutral, but I do tend to shy away from someone if I think they are Too one sided. And I know I can be pretty stubborn in my own beliefs. I just happen to have beliefs on Both sides.
Jim, I really proud of you. You have grown so much just in the time I've known you. It shows not only in your writing, but in you thoughts and ideas. I'll try to keep up.
@ Jim...you are correct my friend...respect is the key and as you point out so well...it is what is missing in the political discourse of the day. It is suggestive that the people who have 'gamed' the system want it that way...can you say divide and conquer?
@ Poolman...I thank you for sparing me any coronary discomfiture. Although I will not speak to any others in their distaste for the station...I can say...however, I do not like it because the tone of the network is one of scorn against people who hold contrary opinions to them. I understand...it's a business...they like the shock thing to appeal to a particular base. As a business...they lost me as a customer for that reason. It's a matter of the writing mantra..."show don't tell." Just saying 'Fair and Balanced' is telling...not showing.
I thank everyone on the right side of the spectrum for allowing me my occasional unfocused rant. I try and keep them to a minimum.
Thomas
ThoughtSandwiches - No problem my friend. To tell you the truth I had completely forgotten it was on there. Sorry it it made anyone uncomfortable, but now it is gone.
Financially, the only winners at the football game are the players and the owners. All who watch pay to do so.
The wifi around here is weird. I don't see my second post, but see a comment about football (which I mentioned). May I reiterate? I am not frustrated. At least not as much as folks who don't realize what is really happening. This is Florida (not the Kokomo that most relate to). We don't sweat Washington, they beat us in a war. We gave em' a go though. No slaves here, just independents who don't like Yankees telling them what to do. We like Charlie Crist and the Yankee Rebublicans hung him out to dry.We have our own plans. We can take care of ourselves. No offense to your cute effort.
We held prayer meetings to stop your greedy developers in their tracks. It worked. Brace up. The tribulation is coming and there an't no way out until the final day.
Until now, I have stayed off of the web, net, snare. I have stuck my neck out to warn you. Don't take the mark.
I'm a bit confused as to the origins of The New World Order, too. First I heard it was a Republican thing, then I heard it was a Democratic thing. I've heard it was something to get rid of our Northern and Southern borders. Then I get on American Airlines and they're talking about One World.
Whats FG? I'm remedial. Sorry, Jim - I know you don't have developers, it was figuratively meant for every freaking body in the world and their extended family. The fact is . . . you can't empty out the treasury and go into debt like we have. It is a sure formula for failure. I shouldn't have minimized your effort, either. My bad. Thing is . . . to heal the problem, we need to declare a biblical year of Jublee. Cancel every debt and erase every law except for the afore mentioned documents and start from scratch. Nothing less will do. Fat chance - hang tough.
Jim, I'm the one that said Bravo for this hub, in the comments above - did ya miss it?
LOL - As for the New World Order thing... I was referring to the comment that WD Curry 111 said 6 hours ago. See? I thoroughly read your hubs AND the comments. (Grin)
Honestly someone who would visit your site and immediately leave it because of news program she doesn't like, is close-minded. I would never think about doing that...at all. Politically and religiously that narrow-mindedness is the mess we're in. It's like someone not talking to someone once they found out they were a different religion- that's half the battle right there.
That woman you refer to who checked out your website represents a large problem- exactly what the problem is between liberals and conservatives.
I agree about a balance between the two- I know too much of one group or side wouldn't work. Just got done with that feminism hub and this is also my point about men and women both bring strengths to the table and it doesn't take one becoming the other as the best solution. You're not trying to convert people, just wake them up and take their power!
Seems that lady thought she could easily be manipulated or mind-controlled- she left the site so fast before she cuold get mind-abducted. lol.I jsut don't understand what people are afraid of by looking at both sides and evaluating things based on an openminded approach. It's good and healthy to play devil's advocate with our thoughts and beliefs sometimes. We should question and reflect upon why we think the way we think, why we vote the way we vote, etc.
What happens if the views that we are being fed have already been heard and rejected by other societies? What if the methods the wish to employ have been tried and failed miserably? Are we just supposed to sit with our arms folded and grin stupidly and say....Oh well.....we lost and we have to do what they wish no matter how disastrous? I don't argue for no reason and i will be no one';s "useful ididot".
In that case, count me in, maybe. I talked too much already. I'll check it out.
In my humble opinion, I wouldn't get rid of the Fox News Feed. If someone is offended by it and doesn't want to look beyond it to see what your message is then they are going to be the kind of person who will look at that site for a reason to be offended.
If you remove the Fox News feed, you are going to have someone else who says that CNN offends them, then do you remove the CNN feed too? I think we make too many sacrifices based on what may or may not offend someone else.
Of course these are just my humble opinions.
Rachel
Jim, I am a firm believer that you HAVE to choose your battles in this life. You CANNOT when them all, so pick and choose the ones that are most important to you and prepare to fight for it. I was raised with this concept and I teach this concept to my kids.
That is what I see you doing with this Housefire Project ... if you want to be sucessful, you have to decide what battles you can win, and the ones you choose not to fight.
You are on it Bro!
Keep it going!
Chris
Contrary to popular opinion, in two independent university studies, the hard news reporting on PBS and FOXNews was determined to be the most unbiased and centered, while all the other sources leaned either left or far left (MSNBC).
Compared to all the left leaning sources, FOX appears to be conservative, but it is not (many of the opinion shows lean conservative, but not the hard news! But even the opinion shows feature liberals.)
Hi Jim,
I specifically excluded the pundits for that very reason. I'm talking about hard news reporting only, and all the networks slant their hard news reporting EXCEPT FOX.
As far as demographics are concerned, FOX wants everyone to tune in, liberal, centrists, and conservatives.
In my humble opinion, lol - I would love the new THP logo.
I love it!
Saying more with less words is a gift. If you can figure out how to do it, then you only need thirty seconds in an elevator with someone to make your point.
Coming quickly to the point is a trait I believe is honored and recognized by both business and political leaders who see endless problems cross their path daily.
Master that skill if you can. If you learn to work with those who can provide the background and details on any given issue, and learn how to condense their information down to the short to the point message, then you can go far in either business or politics, or flat out communicating with people no matter the media.
Except Fox? Okay, whatever. They trashed Charlie Crist, who real Floridians love. He blew off the Republicans and went independent. Finally my party actually had a candidate. They backed Rick Scott who came right off of an episode of the X-Files to cut education (in Florida?) and nix high speed rail in favor of a steam train his cronies want. He set the standard for ripping off medicare with his medical services network and made a pact with the devil to develop in the Everglades. You illustrate the problem.
I could go on, but I am wondering if The Man with No Pants works for Walmart. Christmas is a long way off, brother.
Hello?! You had a Santa hat on. It's not even Thanksgiving yet. They re-arranged Walmart for Christmas already. Did I break it down enough yet? I thought you were an old surfer . . . how did you get so uptight? Truth is . . . I wasn't arguing about Fox, just pointing out how it went down in Florida. You didn't think the X-Files thing was classic?
Good luck getting Republicans and Democrats on board for your effort. The more I talk to Americans elsewhere, the more I agree with my friends here about succession. We're joking, but the tourists don't get it. We have fun with it anyway. To me, the 12 days of Christmas are plenty . . . the rest is bogus. Happy Thanksgiving.
Friends!
ooops! Sorry, I got caught up in this one..........WD? waitin on you!
heh, I noted the reply, and had never even considered an advantage to being deliberately circuitous in an explanation, even though I've seen the tactic used any number of times. Thanks for that, I guess there's a time and place for any given technique.
Like we say around here . . . ya'll are a trip! I love you. Can you dig it? I got chi. Your friends are right. I am cool. I've been hip since hip was hep. I worked at a mental health facility for 10 years. SED types. I am used to you already.
That was an attempt to make a joke, but it did not translate well here.....it seemed kind of funny in my mind...didn't mean ONE ounce of anything negative.
I'm still your number one fan out here bro!!
Chris
Greetings, MNWP,
I will have to admit, that to see FOX anywhere is certainly a negative on the left side of the gate. I would have been appeased with MSNBC or CNN , included with FOX.
This was an important point that you made below:
"Yeah, just look at how conservative and liberal Americans treat one another, yet our conservative and liberal leaders play golf with one another. Hmmm .. Do ya think there's a story there?
You bet there is a story! Could it be that one side or the other is one side only? Just like WB cartoon where the coyote was trying to get the sheep and the sheepdog used lethal tricks to stop him. But they both punched the clock in the morning and sat down together during lunch breaks. Are we all being played for fools here?
The point here is that conservatives and liberals do not see the world in the same way. What we have been trying to get Washington to do is to compromise, it is naive to think that anyone side is going to get all that it wants. My way or the highway isn't going to work
I am with you MWNP, I am more than willing to add my voice to the chorus..Cred2
Cred2 brought out an interesting point. If we had Fox and MSNBC together, the difference in reporting would stand out like a sore thumb. They usually cover pretty much the same stories, and we could then see the difference. It might make us all wonder and investigate who was telling the most truth. None of them report the whole truth.
Southernsweet tea, brother. There you go taking it personal again. I meant (this is southern) all a ya'll. Me, too. I worked there for 10 years. The burn out rate for therapists and teachers was two. Suffice it to say, I saw arguments for demon possession of the worst kind.
I learned something. Few of us are well adjusted. Our whole culture is neurotic. Overly simply put. . a neurosis is a condition where the sufferer has an underlying problem. Someone kicked their dog when they were two. Now, there is an irritant. They desperately want to solve this underlying problem. They mis-identify the source and blame their discomfort on something or someone (object of displacement)
One of the main symptoms of the disorder . . . an inordinate amount of energy and effort is applied to solve the problem. It is directed at primary, secondary, tertiary (and on) objects of displacement. The man who kicked the dog died years ago. The wasted energy only exasperates the problem and the condition becomes more severe.
This is what is going on with American politics, news services and President Hating. I am from a military family (Brig. Gen "Wild" Bill Curry Jr). We were taught try to get our man elected. After the election, someone is sworn in as Commander In Chief. We address him with highest respect. We keep our mouth shut and follow orders. That is how you win the war. Next election . . . we get the stupid bastard out of there.
I honestly believe the Lord has impressed a message on my heart or I wouldn't be here.
Republicans . . . your folks put us in the toilet.
Democrats . . . your people are splashing in the water
Clean up, dry off and get to work!
_
Thanks Jim, we like lime in our tea around here. I am not talking smack. We need to get to work, and I am willing to do my share.
I think one of the reasons I really don't like politics is because of all the high-headed, high-opinionated people that can't pull their head out of their butt long enough to have an intelligent conversation. They won't solve anything if they can't comprimise and come together. Now - more than ever - we need to be Americans instead of dividing ourselves into different parties!
barbergirl28 for president!
Excellent Jim! Great information and comments too. And I also respect your great responses to all your comments. I continue to learn from you and look forward to being a part of the "problem solvers." I'm realizing just how "brainwashed" I was growing up in a strictly democratic household. I haven't seen that letter you talked about a couple weeks ago. Was it sent?
Thanks, I'm doing okay. Had a nice Thanksgiving with my family. I hope you did too. I'm focusing on all the things I have to be thankful for . . .
Jim,
Great Hub. I enjoyed reading this and it was so refreshing. It's sad how many people angrily defend a position; focusing on who did what rather than the actual issue/s. Melinda

JIM,
I am with you on this one. Time to leave those behind that cannot do more that argue, blame, but most of all are so thick headed that they will not even listen. I once read "that I am not against following a good idea, no matter who comes up with the idea." Washington needs to not only read that, but they need to follow it. Up and awesome as always my friend.
